Festival Frenzy: Corn Festival Edition

Corn Festival - Stanton, KY (7/31-8/1)

We are smack in the middle of summer and that can only mean one thing--festival season! I was so excited to kick off the first of many festivals I will sing at this year. For those of you who don't follow my Facebook (www.facebook.com/tayloraustindye), I am trying to sing at as many festivals as possible this season! Keep reading for the scoop on the talent show, the gig, and my favorites from this festival.

The 26th Annual Corn Festival booked me a couple months ago, but a few days before, I was asked to participate in the A-MAIZE-ING Talent Show (kudos to the clever mind who thought of that title) on Friday. I never pass up an opportunity to sing, so I gladly accepted and entered my act that night. I was in the "19 & Older" category with some other girls. One girl played Concerto in Dm (or something like that) and I couldn't stop laughing at the fact that I was about to get up there with my boots and my Fender and hit some country music. My mom's song of choice was of course, "Girl Crush," and the crowd and judges loved it too...so much that I won!

The following night I was scheduled to sing from 5:30-6:45 & 8:30-10:00. I had an incredible DJ from 104.9 WSKV (www.wskvfm.com), Ethan, and he really made me sound great! My first
set list included (as it always does) songs from today all the way back to the 50s. In my second set, I was joined by my friends TJ Howard and Jacob Fultz where we absolutely flew by the seat of our pants. Having been only the second time I'd met Jacob, and the second time I'd ever played with either of them, to say we "winged it" would be generous. Despite the lack of preparedness, we pulled it together and had a lot of fun.

Festival Faves

I can't resist going from tent to tent, hoping I find a hidden treasure. I am a sucker for handmade items, especially from locals, so I couldn't resist picking these up:

  • This dreamcatcher was made by an old man from Stanton, KY. The rings are metal and the tassels are real leather! I couldn't wait to hang it above my bed and I've been staring at it ever since.
  • My second festival fave is this bracelet by Wildfire Designs out of Prestonsburg, KY. They come in silver and gold; I picked up the gold. The bracelet is in the shape of our great state and has "KENTUCKY" stamped into it. I can see lots of tailgating and cheering on the Cats in this guy's future. Check them out at www.facebook.com/wildfiredesigns2015 to get one like it! They also specialize in bullet earrings that are darling.

I can't wait to sing at the Corn Festival next year (yes, I'm already booked for the first weekend of August)! I'd like to give a huge shout out to Evelyn Faulkner and all the event staff at the Corn Festival for having me out and being so welcoming to me and my family.
