OC Fair and Old Town Grill

The Owsley County Fair & Old Town Grill 9/11 and 9/12

The annual fair is held in Owsley County around the first to second week of September. It is a weeklong event including contests at the schools, rides, talent shows, and a community night. I performed on the fair grounds on Community Night, September 11^th. Keep reading for the details of the show!

Community Night is a wonderful thing at the fair. Businesses, non-profits, and school related booths, set up tables on the fair grounds and have door prize entries and freebies for their customers. I sang with my friend, Dustin Wilson, from 6:00-7:30 while the citizens of Booneville made their way around, table to table, to enter for the door prizes and collect their free pens and goodies.

Our set included a few duets, harmonies, and solo songs. We even tried a new song we had never sung before and it turned out great! People were requesting lots of songs, so of course; we tried our best to fulfill their wishes.  A lot of people in our hometown really enjoy country music, so songs like “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “It’s Your Love” were crowd favorites. Although, this audience member was a huge fan of "Girl Crush." Thanks, Jennifer. :)

The next day, September 12^th, I was scheduled to sing again at Old Town Grill. We made our way up to London, set up our equipment and I began singing. 

For anyone who remembers this night, it was absolutely freezing. The stage is set up on an outside patio, so I had to sit outside. At first, there were several loyal listeners that stayed outside to listen for about an hour. After that, they confessed they were just too cold to stay out anymore and returned inside. Although I was scheduled from 7-10, myself, along with the management, decided that it would be best to shut down the outside activities around 8:30.  We grabbed a bite to eat and headed home with the heat cranked up all the way!

Revive River Drive

Revive River Drive - Irvine, KY 9/5/15

Revive River Drive is in it’s 4^th annual year, but this is the first time I have ever entertained for it. The whole day is filled with hot-rodding, food, and live entertainment. Keep reading for details from the show!

I was absolutely thrilled to perform at Revive River Drive in Irvine, Ky. My friends at WSKV 104.9 were broadcasting it live on the air and I would be joining the Jenkins Twins and Dirty Windows on stage. We did a “round robin” set up where one band would play three songs at a time and then the next band would get up and play three songs, and so on and so forth for three hours. During the fourth hour, we all got on stage together and worked up songs to play together on the fly. Keep in mind we didn’t even know each other before this. The atmosphere at this event was very enjoyable, especially if you love old cars and music. I spent the whole time watching the classic cars go by and burn out down the street. Although it was a bit distracting and loud while I was singing, I loved every minute of it. I can’t wait to see what next year’s RRD5 has in store for Irvine. I can definitely say I’ll be going back to get my fill!

Festival Frenzy: Honey Festival

Honey Festival - Jackson, KY 9/4/15

Welcome to the third installment of my Festival Frenzy series! 

I always enjoy going up to Jackson, Breathitt to sing at their annual Honey Festival; this year was no different. Since I am a veteran performer there, I was offered a late Friday night slot from 9:00 to 10:00. Keep reading for details of the show!

The stage is always set up downtown near the Breathitt Fire Department. If you know anything about Jackson or the Honey Festival, this is a prime spot and right in the “heart” of the festival. The stage is under an enormous white tent and surrounded by metal bleachers for festival-goers to take a set and watch the entertainment. There were so many people stirring Friday night! I was thankful to have a large crowd on the bleachers, under the tent, and some even standing around, taking a break from tent hopping and funnel cake eating.

I was joined once again by my friend Dustin Wilson. I love having someone to take the stage with me and I always appreciate his company. When Dustin plays with me, we spice the set up with duets, harmonies, and he sings a few solos. I always make him throw in a Matchbox Twenty tune because he is so good at them!

Festival Finds

After our set, I headed out to the Breathitt 4H Corndog Stand where they have, undoubtedly, the best corndogs in the world. These aren’t just any corndogs. I’m not exactly sure what their secret recipe entails, but it is amazingly delicious. The line was wrapped around the parking lot, but it was sure worth the wait.

Festival Frenzy: Artisan Festival

The Artisan Festival: 8/23/15

The Artisan Festival is held in our state park, Natural Bridge. Just under the sky lift was the perfect location! The whole festival was outside, and boy was it a hot one that day. The Artisan Festival welcomes anyone to come set up a tent and sell their handmade items. We arrived an hour before I was scheduled to sing so I could check out all the vendors that were set up. Around 3:30, I started setting up and doing sound checks. My friends from WSKV were running the sound (the same station from the Corn Festival) and they always make me sound great! (www.wskvfm.com) I sang from 4:00-5:00 under the shelter area. Many people came to watch and even brought their food to the picnic tables to eat while I sang. 

After my performance, I scrambled over to the food tent to get some fine festival cuisine. I found a pulled pork sandwich on the menu that was out of this world! 

My dad had a hotdog that he claims was “one of the best hotdogs he’s ever eaten” but unfortunately, there are no pictures because he scarfed it down within minutes. It must have been as good as he said. 

Festival Finds:

As I said earlier, I love looking at trinkets from vendors at any festival, but this festival was right up my alley. I have a thing for anything handmade. It is so special to think that someone took time to make an item with their own hands; I really appreciate that kind of talent and art. 

Immediately after walking in and skimming over the tents, I was drawn to the artwork from “Frolic in the Forest.” I bought a beautiful hanging with a little terrarium hanging from it. 

    

The shop owner, Heather, told me that she makes everything herself! She has beautiful bracelets, necklaces, dream catchers, rings, and more on her Etsy shop, www.etsy.com/shop/frolicintheforest Her slogan is “A shop for the adventurous, wild, and free” and I think her work really echoes that. Check her out!
